OliType is named for Oli, the family's long-haired tabby. The cat-eared O in the logo is his.
OliType turns what you say into text and types it into whatever app you are using. Everything happens on your Mac: no account, no subscription, no internet needed after setup, and nothing you say is ever uploaded.
Try every feature free for 30 days. Then buy it once and it's yours to keep, with every future update free.
This guide walks through every screen, control, and setting, what each one does, and what it means for you.
0. Installing OliType
- Open the OliType disk image (
.dmg) you downloaded. - In the window that appears, drag the OliType icon onto the Applications folder.
- Eject the disk image (click the eject icon next to it in Finder's sidebar).
- Open OliType from your Applications folder (or press ⌘Space, type OliType, press Return).
OliType needs an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or newer) running macOS 15 or later, and about 1 GB of free space (more if you add AI cleanup).
1. Setup (first launch)
Setup has three steps. A blue OliType banner runs across the top of every step, with Setup 1 of 3 (and so on) on the right so you always know where you are. Oli, the cat OliType is named for, watches from the bottom-right corner.
Step 1: Allow Permissions
OliType asks for exactly two macOS permissions. Nothing else.
| Permission | What it allows | If you say no |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | OliType can hear you while you dictate. It listens only between start and stop. | Dictation cannot work. |
| Accessibility | OliType can notice your hotkey in every app, and type your words into other apps (Mail, Word, Messages, a browser) by pasting for you. | Setup can't finish, because the hotkey can't work without it. If macOS turns it off later, your words go to the clipboard and you press ⌘V yourself. |
- Accessibility unlocks after Microphone is granted, so the rows are done in order.
- Clicking Allow next to Accessibility shows a macOS message: "OliType would like to control this computer using accessibility features." Click Open System Settings in that message, turn OliType on, then come back. The row changes to "Granted" within a few seconds.
- If you clicked Deny or closed the message, click Allow again. This time OliType opens System Settings for you.
Step 2: Choose Microphone
Pick which microphone OliType listens to. Audio stays on your Mac. You can change this later in Settings or from the menu bar.
Step 3: Download the Speech Model
OliType downloads its speech recognition model (NVIDIA Parakeet V3, about 490 MB) automatically. This is a one-time download. The Parakeet V3 row on this screen always shows where it stands: Downloading… with the percent, then a green check and Installed (or Not installed yet if the download hasn't started). While it downloads, the screen dims and a card in the middle says Downloading the speech model, with a progress bar, the percent done, and about how much time is left (for example "About 2 minutes left", worked out from your download speed). Cancel stops the download; click Download to start it again. After 100%, the card says Getting the model ready… for a moment while your Mac prepares the model. Continue stays gray. This can take a few minutes. When the card disappears, the download is done: click Continue to finish setup. From then on, dictation works fully offline.
If the download stops (for example, Wi-Fi drops), a message says "The speech model didn't finish downloading. Check your internet connection, then click Download again."
This step also tells you that your dictated text is kept in History on this Mac, so you can copy it again later. You can turn that off in Settings > Keep history.
The same screen explains the one optional extra, AI cleanup. Most people find OliType works great just as it is, so you can skip it. If you want more polished text later, AI cleanup is a small AI writing model, a second, larger download (about 2.3 GB) that runs on your Mac. It's worth it for emails, documents, and anything you'll share; skip it for quick messages or when you want your exact words. Add it any time in Settings (see AI cleanup).
2. You're ready screen
Shown once, right after setup. It teaches the one thing to remember: your hotkey.
- The three steps: click into a text box, start with your hotkey, stop with your hotkey. The wording matches your hotkey mode (for example "Double-tap Left Option (⌥)" or "Hold down Left Option (⌥)").
- Try it here: a practice box with the cursor already in it. Use your hotkey, say "Hello, this is my first dictation," and use your hotkey again. Your words appear in the box, and OliType tells you it works. Nothing you type here is sent anywhere.
- Your hotkey box: click it, then press a different key, key combination, or foot pedal to change your hotkey right here. Press Esc instead to keep the hotkey you had.
- How it works picker: choose Double-tap (the default), Tap, Hold, or Tap or hold (explained in Settings).
- On a PC keyboard, Option is the key labeled Alt. If double-tapping is hard, choose Tap: one press starts, one press stops.
- Prefer the mouse? The floating Dictate button and the menu bar icon do everything the hotkey does. Press Esc once to cancel; nothing is typed, and History keeps the recording in case you want it back.
- Start using OliType: closes the screen for good and opens the main window. Everything on it can be changed later in Settings.
- You can close OliType's window any time. Your hotkey keeps working, and the OliType icon in the menu bar opens it again.
3. The main window
Open it from the menu bar (Open OliType) or the Dock. Opening OliType from Spotlight, Finder, or Launchpad brings this window to the front. When OliType opens by itself at login, it starts quietly in the menu bar.
- Header band: the OliType logo, name, and tagline.
- Page tabs: Home, History, Vocabulary, Settings, Help. The current page has a white pill with an orange underline.
- Version: the OliType version on this Mac, at the right end of the tab row (also in Settings > About). Include it if you write to support.
- Footer (on Home): "OliType is a project by Bishop Technology Solutions, LLC · btsaz.com". The link opens btsaz.com in your browser.
Help
This guide, built into the app. It works offline and always matches the version you have installed.
- Sections run down the left. The one you're reading is highlighted, and its parts are listed under it.
- Search help at the top lists the sections that mention your words. Press Return to jump to the next place they appear.
- Text size at the bottom makes this guide smaller or bigger, from 70% to 250%. The buttons also work from the keyboard: ⌘- for smaller, ⌘= (or ⌘+) for bigger, ⌘0 for 100%. OliType remembers your size.
- Save as PDF or Print… at the bottom opens the Print window. To keep a copy, choose PDF > Save as PDF.
- "?" buttons beside settings in Settings and Vocabulary open Help at the matching section.
- Links to websites open in your browser.
- You can also open Help from the menu at the top of the screen (Help > OliType Help, ⌘?) or from the menu bar icon (OliType Help). ⌘, opens Settings.
Closing the window does not quit OliType. It keeps running in the menu bar so your hotkey always works.
4. Home
Good to know (after you install)
A short card at the top of Home until you click Got it:
- You can close this window. OliType keeps running, and your hotkey still works in every app. It also opens by itself when you log in (turn that off in Settings > Open at login).
- The floating Dictate button can be turned on or off in Settings or from the menu bar.
- The OliType icon in the menu bar (the cat-eared O) opens this window again, shows what OliType is doing, and gets you to Settings any time.
Free trial (until you buy OliType)
During the 30-day free trial, a slim card at the top of Home shows how many days are left, with Enter License Key… (opens Settings > License) and Buy OliType (opens the store in your browser). Every feature works during the trial. With 5 days left, the card grows a little and says Your free trial ends in 5 days, so the end never surprises you.
When the trial ends, the card turns orange and says Your free trial has ended, and dictation pauses until you enter a license key: the big button says Dictation is paused, and the hotkey, the floating button, and the menu bar's Dictate open this window instead of listening. History, Vocabulary, and Settings all keep working, and nothing you saved is lost. Once OliType is licensed, the card goes away for good.
Finish setting up (only if something is missing)
This orange card appears only if macOS has taken away a permission OliType needs. Each row says what is missing and has a button that fixes it (Allow or Open Settings). When everything is fine, the card is not shown.
The big Dictate button
- Blue mic: ready. Click to start dictating.
- Red stop: listening. Click to stop, and your text is typed.
- Orange spinner: turning speech into text, or cleaning it up. You cannot click it during this short moment.
- Cancel (appears while listening or processing): stops without typing anything. The recording is kept in History for a day, so you can Restore it if you change your mind.
The text next to the button says what is happening right now:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ready to dictate | Nothing is happening. Start with your hotkey or the button. |
| Oli is listening | The mic is on. Talk normally. |
| Oli is typing your words | Your recording is being transcribed on your Mac. |
| AI cleanup is polishing your text | AI cleanup is running (only if the AI cleanup add-on is installed). |
Clicking this button brings OliType to the front. When you stop, OliType switches back to the app you were in before and types there. Your cursor position in that app is kept. For the smoothest experience, use the hotkey or the floating button, which never take focus.
How it works
A short reminder that always reflects your current setup:
- Your hotkey line: for example "Left Option (⌥), set to Double-tap: double-tap to start, double-tap again to stop."
- Steps 1 to 4: where to click, how to start, how to stop, and how to cancel (press Esc once, or click Cancel).
- A promise: OliType never presses Return or sends anything for you. You always get to read your text before sending.
Your last dictation
Appears after your first dictation.
- Shows the text that was last typed.
- Copy: puts that text on the clipboard again (handy if it went into the wrong window).
- Copy original (only if cleanup changed something): copies the words exactly as heard, before cleanup.
- This card is kept in memory only until you quit OliType. If history is on, a line under it reminds you that your dictations are also saved in History on this Mac, and that you can turn that off in Settings > Keep history.
5. History
Every dictation you have made, newest first, saved as text on your Mac only.
Search and filter
- Search box: type one or more words. A dictation matches only if it contains all of them. Search ignores capitals and accents, and also searches the original (before cleanup) text. Matches are highlighted in yellow.
- ✕ in the search box: clears the search.
- When (Today / 7 days / 30 days / All): limits results by date. Combine it with search.
- The line under the search shows how many dictations match.
Each dictation
- Date and time it was made.
- The text (up to four lines; you can select part of it with the mouse).
- Copy: copies the whole dictation. The button briefly reads "Copied".
- Trash can: deletes that one dictation immediately. No confirmation and no undo.
- Right-click a dictation for: Copy, Copy Original (Before Cleanup) (when cleanup changed it), and Delete.
- Cancelled dictations show in orange: "Cancelled (not typed). The recording is kept for a day, so Restore can still turn it into text." Click Restore and OliType turns the recording into text and copies it to the clipboard, ready to paste.
- Failed dictations show in orange: "OliType couldn't turn this recording into text. The audio is still on this Mac." Click Try again. If it works, the text is copied to the clipboard; if not, the entry stays so you can try later.
- While either one runs, its button reads Working…. Both also appear in the right-click menu. Deleting a cancelled or failed dictation also deletes its recording.
Working with several at once
- Select…: turns on selection. Click dictations to check them.
- Select all / Select none: checks or unchecks everything currently shown (respects your search and date filter).
- Copy selected: copies all checked dictations as one block, oldest first, separated by blank lines. Cancelled and failed entries are skipped, since they have no text yet.
- Delete selected: deletes the checked dictations after you confirm. This cannot be undone.
- Done (or Esc): leaves selection mode.
Clear all…
Deletes every saved dictation after you confirm. This cannot be undone.
How long dictations stay here is set in Settings > Keep history. If history is off, a note says new dictations are not being saved.
6. Vocabulary
Two ways to teach OliType your words. They work differently, so choose the right one. Exact fixes come first because they work on every Mac.
Exact fixes (rules)
- What it is: find-and-replace rules applied to every dictation, with or without cleanup.
- How it works: on the left, what OliType wrongly writes (or a phrase you say on purpose). On the right, what you want instead. Examples: "Jon" to "John", or "my email address" to your actual address.
- Separate several wrong versions on the left with commas; they all turn into the right side.
- The right side is typed exactly as you wrote it, including symbols like
$and\. - Add: fill both boxes and press Add or Return. Remove: the minus button on a rule.
Names & terms (hints)
- What it is: a list of words OliType should spell your way: names, places, brands, product names, jargon.
- How it works: AI cleanup reads this list and fixes anything that sounds like one of your words. Example: add "Paterson" and OliType writes Paterson even when it hears "Patterson".
- Requirement: hints need the optional AI cleanup add-on, which needs a Mac with 16 GB of memory or more.
- If this Mac can't run AI cleanup, a gray note says so and suggests exact fixes instead.
- If cleanup isn't installed, an orange note says so, with a Get AI cleanup button that opens Settings right at AI cleanup. While cleanup is downloading, the note says hints start working when it finishes.
- Add: type a word (or several separated by commas) and press Add or Return.
- Remove: the minus button next to a word.
Starter examples: a new install includes OliType under Names & terms and one exact fix that turns common misspellings ("Oli type", "Ollie type", "Olly type", and a few others) into OliType. Delete them any time.
Which to use: use an exact fix when OliType gets one thing wrong the same way again and again, or to expand a spoken phrase into longer text. Use a hint for names you say occasionally, if you have AI cleanup.
If you add something that's already there, a note says so ("You already have an exact fix for…" or "…is already in your names and terms.").
7. Settings
Every setting has its own explanation right under its name. A ? beside a name opens the matching part of Help.
Dictation
Hotkey
The key that starts and stops dictation. Click the box, then press the key, key combination, mouse button, or foot pedal you want. While the box says "Press new hotkey (Esc keeps old)", pressing Esc or clicking away keeps your current hotkey.
- Default: double-tap Left Option (⌥) to start, double-tap it again to stop. Left Option sits under your left thumb, and no app uses a lone Option tap. Double-tap means a single stray press never starts dictation by accident.
- A lone modifier key (like Option) only triggers when pressed and released by itself, so typing ⌥ shortcuts or Option-clicking with the mouse does not start dictation.
- On a PC keyboard, Option is the key labeled Alt.
- Foot pedal tip: record the hotkey by pressing the pedal itself, so OliType learns exactly what the pedal sends.
How the hotkey works
| Mode | Start | Stop | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double-tap (default) | Tap twice quickly | Tap twice again | One-handed use with no accidental starts |
| Tap | Tap once | Tap again | The fastest start, if you never press Option by accident |
| Hold | Hold the key down | Let go | Short bursts; push-to-talk |
| Tap or hold | Quick tap, or hold | Tap again, or let go if holding | Both habits, no switching (hold longer than half a second to use hold) |
With Double-tap, a single tap does nothing. The two taps need to land within about 0.7 seconds. If you want the quickest start and never bump Option by accident, switch to Tap.
Microphone
Which mic OliType listens to. System default follows whatever macOS is using, so plugging in a headset or connecting AirPods switches automatically. Choosing a specific mic locks OliType to it. If that mic is unplugged, the menu shows Saved mic (not connected) and OliType uses the system default until it's back.
Floating Dictate button
Shows or hides the on-screen OliType button (see section 9). Turn it off if you only use the hotkey.
Sound
A tone the moment listening starts and another the moment it stops, so you know without looking.
- Styles: Chime (default), Pop, Click, Bell, Droplet, or Off. All are original OliType sounds.
- ▶ plays the start tone then the stop tone.
- Different stop sound (appears when a sound is chosen): off means stopping uses the matching tone of the same style; on lets you pick any style for the stop tone with Stop sound.
- Canceling plays a short low tap.
- If your Mac's sound is muted, you will not hear the tones. OliType does not mute your Mac; playing media is paused instead while you dictate.
Speech recognition
Parakeet V3 / Parakeet V2
The speech model that turns your voice into text. Both run entirely on your Mac.
- Parakeet V3 (recommended, about 490 MB): 25 languages, detected automatically as you speak: Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian. Other languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Turkish, and Vietnamese, are not supported yet.
- Parakeet V2 (about 470 MB): English only. Worth trying if V3 mishears you.
- Buttons:
- In use: the model OliType uses now. It can't be removed, so you always have one.
- Use: downloaded; click to switch to it.
- Remove…: downloaded but not in use; deletes it from your Mac to free the space, after you confirm. You can download it again any time.
- Download: not on your Mac yet. While it downloads you see a progress bar, about how much time is left, and Cancel, which stops it and removes the partial download. After 100% it says Getting the model ready… for a moment while your Mac prepares the model.
Remove "um" and "uh"
Instant and always available. Removes filler sounds (um, uh, hmm) without changing anything else. On by default. Turn it off if you want a word-for-word transcript.
AI cleanup (optional add-on)
Most people find OliType works great just as it is. AI cleanup is an extra for people who want more polished text, and everything about it lives here, in one place.
What it is: a small AI writing model (Qwen 3, about 2.3 GB) that runs entirely on your Mac, never online. After you stop talking, it:
- Removes false starts and repeated words.
- Keeps only your correction when you change your mind ("Tuesday, no, Wednesday" becomes "Wednesday").
- Fixes punctuation and capitalization, and follows spoken cues like "comma", "question mark", "new line", and "new paragraph". Without AI cleanup, those cues are typed as words.
- Spells your Vocabulary names and terms your way.
- Safety check: if cleanup changes too much or alters a number, your exact words are typed instead, and a short message tells you why.
How long it takes: about 1 second for every 10 seconds you talk, because the AI rewrites your whole dictation word by word. A short sentence feels nearly instant; a 30-second dictation takes about 3 seconds; a full minute takes about 6 seconds. Without AI cleanup, turning speech into text usually takes about a second, a little longer for long dictations or older Macs. While it works, the indicator says AI cleanup.
What you see, step by step: AI cleanup works like the speech models. There's no separate switch: once it's installed, it's on.
| You see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Download (2.3 GB) | Cleanup isn't on this Mac. | Click it if you want cleanup. |
| A progress bar with the percent, about how much time is left, and Cancel | The model is downloading. Keep dictating; your text just isn't cleaned up yet. | Wait. Cleanup starts working by itself when it finishes. Cancel stops the download and removes what was downloaded. |
| An orange "The download didn't finish" message and Try again | The download was interrupted (for example, Wi-Fi dropped). | Click Try again. |
| A green check, In use, and Remove… | Cleanup is installed and cleaning every dictation. | Nothing. To stop using it, click Remove… and confirm: cleanup turns off and the 2.3 GB is freed. You can download it again any time. |
| "Not available on this Mac" | Cleanup needs an Apple silicon Mac with at least 16 GB of memory. | Nothing; dictation works fully without it. |
To get your exact words back later: right-click the dictation in History and choose Copy Original (Before Cleanup), or use Copy Original (Before Cleanup) in the menu bar for the latest one.
Privacy
Keep history
How long the text of each dictation stays on your Mac: Forever (default), 30 days, 7 days, 1 day, or Off.
- Off keeps nothing once the text is inserted (History stays empty).
- Shorter periods automatically delete older dictations.
- Recordings (audio) are deleted as soon as they are transcribed, whatever you choose. Two exceptions, so you never lose words by accident:
- A failed dictation keeps its recording until you click Try again or delete it.
- A cancelled dictation keeps its recording for one day so you can Restore it, then OliType deletes it by itself. With Keep history set to Off, it is deleted the next time OliType opens.
- Nothing ever leaves your computer.
Move to another computer
OliType has no account, so nothing syncs between computers by itself. Instead, you carry your setup in one small file.
- Export… saves a file named
OliType Settings.olitype.json. It holds your hotkey and how it works, your Names & terms, your Exact fixes, your sound choices, whether the floating button shows, Remove "um" and "uh", whether AI cleanup is installed, Keep history, Appearance, and which Parakeet model you use. - Import… on your other computer reads that file and applies it. OliType checks it first: a damaged file, one from a newer OliType, or one far larger than any real settings file is refused with a short message, and a hotkey that would take over your mouse clicks or the Esc key is never applied. Names, terms, and fixes are added to what's already there; nothing is deleted. A short message then tells you what was added and anything left to do.
- What doesn't move: your dictation history, your microphone choice (it's specific to each computer), and the downloaded models. If the file says cleanup or Parakeet V2 was in use but it isn't downloaded on this computer, the message tells you where to get it; OliType never starts a large download without asking.
- Moving the file: AirDrop, email it to yourself, or a USB stick. It contains no recordings and no dictation text, only your settings and vocabulary.
App
Appearance
System (follows your Mac), Light, or Dark.
Open at login
Starts OliType when you log in, so your hotkey is always ready. On by default: OliType turns it on when you finish setup. Turn it off here if you'd rather open OliType yourself; it stays off.
Show in Dock
On: OliType has a Dock icon. Off: it lives only in the menu bar; open the window from the menu bar icon.
Check for updates
On (the default): when OliType opens, and once a day while it runs, it asks olitype.com whether a newer version is out. The request carries nothing about you or your words. When there is one, OliType shows what's new with Install Update, Remind Me Later, and Skip This Version. Install Update downloads it, checks that it really comes from us, replaces OliType, and reopens it; your settings, history, vocabulary, and license stay as they are. Off: OliType never checks by itself; choose Check for Updates… from the OliType menu or the menu bar menu any time. Every update is free.
License
Where you enter the key you get when you buy OliType.
- During the trial or after it: the days left, a box to paste your License key, a Name this Mac box, Activate, Find My Key…, and Buy OliType…. The key is in your receipt email.
- Find My Key… (always shown): opens the OliType customer portal. Sign in with the email you bought OliType with and you'll get a one-time code; there you can see your key and receipts, and free a Mac you no longer have.
- Name this Mac: starts as "My Mac". Change it to something you'll recognize, like "Office iMac", so you can tell your Macs apart in your list of activations. OliType never sends your computer's own name.
- Activating checks your key with our store, Polar, once. It sends only the key and the name you typed. After that, OliType never goes online for your license, and it keeps working with Wi-Fi off.
- Licensed: a green Licensed on this Mac check, the end of your key (the rest is hidden), the name you gave this Mac, and how many Macs the key works on.
- More Macs (once licensed): need OliType on more Macs than your key covers, or want to move up from 1 Mac to 3 and pay only the difference? Click Email Us… (or write to support@olitype.com) and we'll sort it out.
- Remove License from This Mac…: after you confirm, takes the license off this Mac so you can use the key on another one. Nothing else on this Mac changes. This Mac goes back to the free trial if it has days left; otherwise dictation pauses here until you enter a key again. Moving to a new Mac? Remove the license from the old one first, then activate on the new one. If the old Mac is gone, click Find My Key… and free it there, or write to support@olitype.com.
What you get: one purchase, no subscription, and every future update free.
About
Who makes OliType (Bishop Technology Solutions, LLC, with a link to btsaz.com), the version, and credits for the speech and writing models it uses: NVIDIA Parakeet for speech recognition, and Qwen 3 for AI cleanup.
8. Menu bar menu
Click the OliType icon (the cat-eared O) in the menu bar. Opening this menu does not take focus from the app you are typing in, so dictating from here still types where you were typing.
Dictation · (your mode): (your hotkey)
The header reminds you of your hotkey and its mode, for example "Dictation · Double-tap: Left Option (⌥)".
- Dictate / Stop and Insert: starts dictation, or stops it and types your text. Disabled for the moment while processing.
- Cancel (nothing is typed): stops the current dictation without typing. Only available while dictating or processing. The recording waits in History for a day if you want to Restore it.
- Microphone ▸: System Default (follows your Mac) at the top, then each connected mic. A checkmark shows the current choice.
Your text
- Copy Last Text: copies your latest dictation again.
- Copy Original (Before Cleanup): copies the latest dictation as heard, before cleanup. Only available when cleanup changed it.
- Recent Dictations ▸: your last eight dictations, each shown with its time and the start of its text. Click one to copy it. Show All History… opens the History page. If history is off, it says so.
- Retry Last Failed Dictation: appears only when your newest dictation failed and its recording is still available. Transcribes it again. (History's Try again button does the same for any failed dictation.)
OliType
- Show Floating Dictate Button: same as the Settings switch.
- Reset Floating Button Position: moves the floating button back to the bottom-right corner of your main screen (use this if you lost it).
- Buy OliType… (trial: N days left): opens the store in your browser. Shown only until OliType is licensed; after the trial it reads (trial ended).
- Open OliType: opens the main window on Home.
- Settings… (⌘,): opens the main window on Settings.
- OliType Help: opens this guide.
- Check for Updates…: asks olitype.com whether a newer OliType is out, tells you either way, and offers Install Update when there is one. The same item is in the OliType menu at the top of the screen.
- Quit OliType: stops OliType completely. Your hotkey will not work until you open it again.
Before setup is finished, the menu shows only Finish Setting Up OliType… and Quit OliType.
9. Floating Dictate button
A small OliType button that floats above your other windows, made for mouse-only and one-handed use.
- The button: the OliType icon, a label, and a grip (≡) on the right.
- "Dictate": click to start.
- Red stop over the icon, "Stop and insert": click to stop and type your text.
- Orange spinner, "Typing": working; not clickable for that moment.
- ✕ (appears while dictating or processing): cancel; nothing is typed, and History keeps the recording.
- Border turns red while listening.
- It follows you: on a Mac with more than one display, the button moves to the screen your pointer is on, at the same spot.
- Moving it: drag the button by its grip or its edge. That spot is remembered, measured from the bottom-right corner, on every screen.
- Clicking it never takes focus away from the app you are typing in, so your text lands exactly where you were typing.
- Hide or show it in Settings > Floating Dictate button or from the menu bar. Reset Floating Button Position in the menu bar puts it back in the bottom-right corner.
10. While you dictate
- Start tone plays and a small black indicator appears on the screen your pointer is on. It shows Oli is listening above a moving sound wave, with the OliType icon on the right.
- Press Esc once at any time to cancel. Nothing is typed, and the recording waits in History for a day in case you want to Restore it.
- Stop tone plays the moment listening ends. The indicator then says Oli is typing while your speech becomes text (usually about a second), and AI cleanup if that add-on is installed (about 1 second per 10 seconds of talking). Then your words are typed where you were typing.
- Music or other media that is playing pauses while you dictate and resumes afterward.
- OliType never presses Return or Send.
- Sharing your screen? The indicator, the floating button, and OliType's messages are hidden from screen shares and recordings, so the people watching only see your text appear.
- With VoiceOver on, OliType speaks what is happening: "Listening" when it starts, "Writing it down" when you stop, then "Typed" or "Copied to clipboard. Paste it where you want it." If you use speakers instead of headphones, VoiceOver's "Listening" may be picked up at the start of your dictation; headphones avoid that.
11. Messages OliType may show
| Message | What happened | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "OliType can't type for you yet, so your words go to the clipboard. Turn on OliType in Privacy & Security > Accessibility." | Shown when OliType opens and Accessibility is off. | Click Open Accessibility Settings and turn OliType on. |
| "Copied to clipboard. Press ⌘V to paste. Allow Accessibility to insert text automatically." | Accessibility permission is missing, so OliType could not type for you. | Press ⌘V. Click Open Settings in the message and turn OliType on under Accessibility. |
| "No text field was selected. Your text is on the clipboard: press ⌘V to paste." | Your cursor was not in a place that accepts text. | Click into a text box and press ⌘V. |
| "OliType couldn't turn that recording into text. Your audio is saved in History." | Transcription failed. | Click Try again in the message, or later in History. |
| "OliType can't hear a microphone…" | No microphone is connected or working (for example, a closed laptop lid with no headset). | Open the lid or plug in a mic, or click Open Settings and pick one under Microphone. |
| "The speech model didn't finish downloading…" | The speech model download stopped. | Check your internet connection, then click Download again. |

When text could not be typed, it always stays on your clipboard; your previous clipboard is not restored over it.
12. Privacy and what is stored
| Data | Where | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Audio recordings | Your Mac | Deleted right after transcription. Failed ones are kept until retried or deleted; cancelled ones are kept for a day |
| Dictation text (History) | Your Mac | Per Keep history (default Forever) |
| Your last dictation | Memory only | Until you quit |
| Vocabulary and exact fixes | Your Mac | Until you remove them |
| Speech and cleanup models | Your Mac | Until you remove them |
| Trial start date and license | Your Mac's keychain (and OliType's preferences) | Kept when you delete the app, so reinstalling doesn't restart the trial or ask for your key again |
| Exported settings file | Wherever you save it | Until you delete it. Contains settings and vocabulary only, no recordings or dictation text |
- Network use: only to download the models you choose (from Hugging Face), once; to activate or remove your license key when you click (Polar receives the key and the name you gave this Mac); and, if Check for updates is on, to ask olitype.com which version is newest. Dictation itself works with Wi-Fi off.
- No telemetry, no accounts, no cloud AI. The update check (Settings > Check for updates) asks olitype.com only which version is newest.
- Data folder:
~/Library/Application Support/com.btsaz.olitype/.
13. Troubleshooting
- No start or stop sound: check that your Mac is not muted and that Settings > Sound is not set to Off.
- Text does not appear in the app: make sure Accessibility is on (System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility > OliType). Your text is on the clipboard either way; press ⌘V.
- Accessibility is on but OliType still says it is not: an old entry may be confused. In Terminal run
tccutil reset Accessibility com.btsaz.olitype, reopen OliType, and allow it again. - The window is cut off or feels cramped (small screens): OliType sizes its window to fit your screen, and every page scrolls. Drag the bottom edge to make it taller, or hide the Dock (System Settings > Desktop & Dock) for more room.
- Dictation starts by accident: make sure How the hotkey works is set to Double-tap (the default), or pick a different hotkey.
- Double-tap doesn't start dictation: tap a little faster. Both taps must land within about 0.7 seconds, and each tap should be a quick press, not a hold.
- First word missing: start talking right after the start tone. If it keeps happening, tell us; the timing is logged for diagnosis.
- "OliType can't hear a microphone": on a laptop with the lid closed, the built-in mic is off. Open the lid, or plug in a headset or USB mic, then check Settings > Microphone.
- Cancelled by mistake: within a day, open History and click Restore on the cancelled entry. The text is copied to the clipboard, ready to paste.
- Lost the floating button: menu bar > Reset Floating Button Position.
- The hotkey does nothing right after setup: OliType starts listening for your hotkey the moment Accessibility is allowed. If it still doesn't respond after a few seconds, quit OliType from the menu bar and open it again.
- The first dictation takes a second or two to start: some microphones, especially USB webcams, need a moment to wake up the first time. Wait for the start tone, then talk. Later dictations start faster.
- Can't see the listening indicator: it appears on the screen your pointer is on. With two displays, look where your mouse is.
14. Uninstalling
- If you're moving your license to another Mac, first choose Remove License from This Mac… in Settings > License. Then click the OliType icon in the menu bar and choose Quit OliType.
- Drag OliType from your Applications folder to the Trash.
- Optional, to remove your history, vocabulary, and downloaded models as well: in Finder choose Go > Go to Folder…, enter
~/Library/Application Support/, and delete thecom.btsaz.olitypefolder (and theFluidAudiofolder, which holds the speech model). - Optional: in System Settings > Privacy & Security, remove OliType from Microphone and Accessibility.
- Optional: in System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions, remove OliType if it's still listed.
